Modification proposed to Wisconsin Statutes 704.90 Self-service storage facilities
The WSSA is proposing to modify the self storage lien sale law. The proposed changes are in response to a 2008 Wisconsin court case involving the definition of a "commercially reasonable" lien sale. In this case, a Wisconsin jury ruled against Public Storage and awarded $400,000 to a former storage renter. Click here to view the proposed legislation. We are actively soliciting member's comments and questions on these proposed changes. Please send them to us!

Get More Bids on your Lien Sales
Getting bidders to your lien sales is important. You’ll get more competitive bids, reduce the amount of lost rent, and get a better assessment of the fair market value of the content.
Here are some ways to increase the bidder turnout at your sales:

• Advertise on Craigslist or other websites
• Run classified ads in the garage sale section your newspaper
• Place sale signs in front of your facility
• Post flyers on your office door and keypads
• Maintain a list of bidders and send them a postcard or email to advertising sales
• Place a sale notice on your facility website
• Go to flea markets and drop off fliers

Late Fee Bill Signed into Law!
A WSSA-sponsored bill, 704.90 (4b), was recently signed into law by Governor Doyle allowing self storage operators to charge a reasonable late fee for past due rent. Ms. Lisa Chiapetta headed the WSSA efforts to pass this bill. Thanks to all our members for working hard to get this significant legislation passed. WSSA works!
